Our History

In it's early days, Summit was known as a bustling, growing railroad and farming town. Many businesses and specialty shops sprang up downtown. Starting out in 1888, a young Julius Theodore Covington began selling and trading mules, horses and buggies. Always looking for good livestock for his customers, "Mr. The" was a master at his trade. He sought out only the best, getting livestock by railcar from as far away as Kansas.

As times changed, so did the merchandise. Farming implements and livestock gave way to general merchandise, and wood burning stoves gave way to modern appliances and housewares. His son Gordon joined him in the store in 1920 and the name of the store changed to J.T. Covington and Son. While cotton was king, J.T. Covington and Son was the premier place to go in southwest Mississippi for farming and home needs.

Gordon Sr

In 1948, Gordon Covington, Jr., newly graduated from LSU with a degree in animal husbandry, joined the business. Water wells, as well as all farm related items were still sold throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's. As farming faded, the Covington family delved into other areas of interest. Western wear, including boots, hats, and jeans, was sold by the thousands. As the "Urban Cowboy" era phased out, so did The Corral Shop at Covington's.

In 1980, Gordon, Jr.'s daughter, Cristy, joined the business after graduating from the University of Mississippi with a degree in interior design. It proved to be a good fit for the store as paint, wallpaper and flooring were added to the sales mix.

In 1994, Cristy and her husband Hal purchased the store's assets from family members and affiliated with Ace Hardware Corporation that same year in order to improve purchasing power. Since taking the reigns of the store more than fifteen years ago, they have increased sales space and added computerized sales and purchasing. Service is a key component of the business as well as Covington's has an excellent flooring department, specializing in all types of ceramic, carpet, and wood, with a superb installation crew. They also offer numerous other specialty services including fully certified plumbing repairs, custom paint mixing and professional decorator assistance.

In 2008, with a business management degree from Ole Miss, Cristy's son Jake joined the store. An avid outdoorsman, Jake has added a sporting goods department with an archery and outdoor shop and forged partnerships with Stihl Power Equipment and Exmark commercial mowers.

For five generations now, the Covington family has been proudly serving Southwest Mississippi with friendly, knowledgeable service and the adaptation necessary to meet the needs of a growing community and customer base. Their commitment to serve Southwest Mississippi has been a fixture in the community for more than a century and will continue in the future.
